I've been day-dreaming about this collection for a while and now I've finally started working on it!
These are the features these pots will have in common:
- Stained clay body. The colour of each pot is decided from the moment I wedge the clay into a ball to throw on the potter's wheel. This is in part so I can leave part of the pot unglazed without compromising on surface decoration. The other reason is that I can't bring myself to decide on a colour for a pot once it's fired in the bisque kiln. Choosing a colour means, to my mind, choosing a personality for each pot and that is one of the most difficult decisions I ever have to make as a potter.
- Partially unglazed. Because the stained clay is decorative in itself, I intend to leave some of the pot unglazed. This way, the tactile experience with every pot includes the cold, glossy, glazed surfaces next to the rough, earthy, unglazed clay.
- Organic shapes. No straight edges, nothing too constricted. Flowy lines, reminiscent of flower bulbs.
- Functional and decorative. They have jobs - like holding hot drinks, fruit or jewelry but, rather than hiding in a cupboard, they like to be displayed wherever you need a pop of colour. No production line pots, every item will be unique. I do like to create tumblers and mugs in pairs so expect some tumbler "pals", although they don't both always make it through to the end of the ceramic process.
That's it! No limit on what colours I use, very low chance that I will repeat the exact same colours on anything. So if you'd like to commission a colourful piece, I would love to hear about it but expect there will be colour variation. I do intend to work on this collection for the entire year of 2023 so contact me if you have ideas based on these guidelines that you would like to see immortalized in clay.
Below are some examples of what this collection will include.
